WHAT are Closet Orphans, you ask?
They are the Outliers in your wardrobe.
You know…the pieces you fell in love with, bought and then brought home only to realize you have NOTHING to wear with them.
So, they hang in your closet gathering dust and WORSE…trigger guilt every time you look at them. Annnnnd, they may even still have the price tags on them!
Noooooo! Not price tags!
You loved them enough to purchase them – let’s see what we can do to resurrect that lovin’ feeling!
Now, I’m going to confess… this is my own Closet Orphan. It’s an ivory linen double breasted vest I purchased at the end of the summer season last year. I loved this little baby – but didn’t know what I would wear with it at the time I bought it. It’s super on-trend and a little different than my usual choice of a blazer.
Here are the 3 strategies I used to rescue this little fave.
1. All in the Color Family
Here’s an EASY place to start. Pick out garments and accessories in your closet which share the same color or color family as your Closet Orphan.
ALL of them.
They could be prints, solids or stripes.
Now lay them out on your bed – one by one, seeing how they work with your Closet Orphan.
Can they be layered, under or over something else?
Try it on.
Chances are if it shares the same color (or color family), it may work with the right finishing touches.
2. Exercise Your Creative Muscles
That’s right. You’ve got to exercise your creative muscles here. Throw those Closet Orphans a life line!
Silhouettes have changed and keep changing. Chances are that the way you wore something a few years ago has changed now.
Layers are a big trend – short over long, blousy and boxy, short booties, cropped tops over long blousy tunics and skinny jeans – yes, they are still around.
Try your Closet Orphan on with items you may never have DREAMED of!
Layer it under or over.
OR – choose a color that has the same color intensity but is a completely different color. You may be surprised at how fantastic it looks!
Shown here, one of my clients asked me to rescue her favorite cobalt pencil skirt.
She wore it one way. That’s it. The same top and blazer combo every time.
I created 10 different combinations she adored!
Here’s a look at the cobalt skirt paired with a fitted lemon sweater. So fresh and unexpected!
The secret here is that the intensity of colors she’s wearing are equally bold, AND the black shoes, belt, necklace and her dark hair all create a cohesive, pulled together look!
3. It’s all in the Details
Pssst….the secret to making any Closet Orphan look pulled-together is the accessories.
Imagine all the outfits you see in the photos below WITHOUT the necklaces, belts, scarves, shoes and bracelets.
Not something I would enjoy wearing.
What do you notice about the outfits shown here?
In many of the outfits, the accessories are all the same or similar color in each outfit.
Lovely, raid your dusty jewelry box, scarf drawer and shoe racks.
You’ll feel AMAZING in your “New” outfits knowing that the lifeline to your Closet Orphan rescue is your ingenious creativity and your long forgotten accessories.
AND the BEST PART?
You didn’t need to spend a dime on anything new!
